Ewha Womans University stands as one of the largest and most esteemed educational institutions for women. The university established its educational mission to train women under the educational principles of "Truth, Goodness, and Beauty" which served as the first school for women in East Asia. The university has gained international recognition through its "ECC" (Ewha Campus Complex) which functions as a vast environmentally sustainable underground facility that operates as a natural extension of its surrounding environment. The research university of Ewha creates an educational atmosphere which enables students to develop themselves while they work to address social challenges through their studies.
The university was founded in May 1886 when American missionary Mary F. Scranton established a small school which provided education to one student in her Jeong-dong home. The name "Ewha," meaning "Pear Blossom," was later bestowed by Emperor Gojong in 1887, symbolizing the beauty and resilience of women's education. The institution experienced multiple important historical periods which included both the Japanese occupation and the Korean War when it operated from temporary facilities in Busan. The university reached multiple successes when it became Korea's first government-accredited four-year university in 1946 and transformed from a basic mission school into a global center for academic excellence and feminist studies.
