Pusan National University

Pusan National University operates as a leading public research institution in Busan, which serves as South Korea's second-largest city and its main port. The university functions as the first national university that provides complete academic programs since the country gained its independence, which it operates from four specialized campuses in Busan and Yangsan and Miryang and Ami to serve as an essential educational and cultural center for the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. The university receives broad acknowledgment for its research abilities which it develops through partnerships with local businesses that focus on engineering and maritime science fields. The university campus sits at the base of Geumjeong Mountain which creates a picturesque territory that the university designates as its "University in the Forest" identity.

The institutions history began on May 15 1946 through the combined effort of local residents who donated money and Dr In Ku Yuns leadership as its first president. The institution started as Pusan National College which had two faculties but reached national university status in 1953. PNU functioned as a central institution during the 20th century because the university served as a "conscience of the times" throughout the significant governmental changes that led to Korea's democratization and industrial development. The university served as the launch point for the BUMA Democratic Uprising which occurred in 1979 and marked a significant moment in South Korea's march toward democracy, which now exists as a national holiday.
