The history of Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) can be traced back to the early 1990s, when the Catalan Parliament approved the creation of a new public university in Catalonia. The university was named after Pompeu Fabra, a Catalan philologist and linguist who is considered to be the father of modern Catalan.
The first classes at UPF were given on October 8, 1990, in the Balmes building, which was formerly the site of the Fòrum Vergés cultural center. The university initially offered undergraduate programs in Law and Economics and Business Sciences.
In the years that followed, UPF expanded its academic offerings to include a wide range of programs in the social sciences, humanities, and communication. The university also established a strong research focus, and quickly became one of the leading research universities in Spain.
