University of the Basque Country

University of the Basque Country operates as the major public research university throughout the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain. The university became an official institution in 1980 to replace the University of Bilbao which had its academic foundation established through the 16th-century University of Oñati. The university uses "Eman ta zabal zazu" (Give and distribute [the fruit]) as its official motto which derives from the Basque traditional anthem Gernikako Arbola to demonstrate its dedication to spreading knowledge and Basque heritage throughout the world.

The institution operates as a distinctive educational facility because its campus system extends across all three Basque Country provinces which include Araba, Bizkaia, and Gipuzkoa. The Bizkaia Campus serves as the largest campus which includes its primary location in Leioa that features an extensive architectural design which provides views of the valley plus multiple urban sites throughout Bilbao. The Gipuzkoa Campus exists in San Sebastián which combines historical structures with contemporary research centers that overlook the Bay of La Concha. The Araba Campus exists in Vitoria-Gasteiz which functions as an integral part of the city while focusing on the study of humanities and oenology.
