Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka

Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) is a national university in Belihuloya, Sri Lanka.

Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL) boasts a history that blends ancient wisdom with modern academic excellence. While the university itself was formally established in 1991, its roots burrow deep into the fertile soil of Sri Lankan education, stretching back centuries.

The seeds of SUSL were sown as early as the 13th century, flourishing under the reign of King Parakramabahu II. During this era, the Dambadeniya kingdom nurtured a vibrant monastic university in Palabaddala, known as the Deva Pathiraja Pirivena. This center of learning attracted scholars from across the region, laying the foundation for a rich intellectual tradition in the Sabaragamuwa province.

Fast forward to the late 20th century, and the need for accessible higher education in the region resurfaced. In 1991, the Sabaragamuwa University College (SAUC) emerged in Belihuloya, initially affiliated with the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. The college offered job-oriented certificate programs and soon blossomed into a vibrant academic hub.

The dedication of its founders and the growing demand for diverse academic offerings paved the way for a historic transformation. In 2006, SAUC shed its affiliated status and proudly claimed its rightful place as the 12th national university of Sri Lanka, christened the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.
