Linköping University

Linköping University is a major public research university in Sweden and is known as one of Sweden's most innovative academic institutions. LiU has four campuses—Linköping, Norrköping, and Lidingö (Stockholm)—and is one of Sweden's leading research institutes due to its boundary-crossing research and historical focus on interdisciplinary collaboration. The university's main campus, Valla, is an active hub of academic and research activity; however, its Norrköping campus is located within a uniquely revitalized industrial area on the banks of the Motala ström river. LiU has an informal, open culture that fosters creativity and is very closely integrated into the surrounding community and high-tech business sectors.

The origins of LiU can be traced back to the mid-1960s, which was a period of unprecedented growth in post- secondary institutions in Sweden. During the late 1960s, the Riksdag decided to open a branch of Stockholm University in Linköping. The initial effort to establish the new university was completed in 1969 with the founding of Linköping University College, which is best known for developing innovative academic structures, such as the first interdisciplinary thematic research departments in Sweden. In 1975, LiU was awarded full-fledged university status, becoming the sixth in Sweden. From this point on, LiU greatly expanded its facilities and geographical reach.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Linköping University is positioned as the #310 top university in the world, which makes it the #7 top university in Sweden. The university's global rank decreased by 6 points from last year.
