Umeå University serves as the primary higher educational institution for northern Sweden from its base in Umeå which operates as an active and lively city. The institution became the fifth university in Sweden when King Gustaf VI Adolf inaugurated it on September 17, 1965. The establishment of the university happened after local citizens and members of parliament worked for twenty years to create educational and research opportunities in northern Sweden. The university began its academic journey in the mid-1950s when a dental school and teaching hospital opened which created the foundation for future academic growth. The university has achieved various important scientific accomplishments since its establishment which includes the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool which received a Nobel Prize in Chemistry as a major discovery made at the institution.
