Uppsala University

Uppsala University is known in Swedish as Uppsala Universitet, and is located in Uppsala, Uppsala län, Sweden. Its acronym is UU. It has more than 22,000 students who major in fields including Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Medicine, Nursing, Politics, Religion, and Theology.

Founded in 1477, Uppsala was once an ecclesiastical center. The area was a trading hub and settlements were found there even back into the Middle Ages. The 1600s would prove to be a turbulent time for the school, with a lowering in attendance. Since that time, Uppsala has seen much growth and expansion. 

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Uppsala University became a leading center of learning in Sweden. Some of the university's most famous scholars from this period include the botanist Carl Linnaeus and the astronomer Anders Celsius.

In the 19th century, Uppsala University underwent a period of modernization. The university curriculum was expanded, and new faculties were established. Uppsala University also became more accessible to students from all walks of life.

In the 20th century, Uppsala University continued to grow and develop. The university expanded its research facilities and established new programs in fields such as engineering and social sciences. Today, Uppsala University is one of the leading research universities in Europe.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Uppsala University is positioned as the #93 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Sweden. The university's global rank is improved by 10 points from last year.
