Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne is located in Lausanne, Vaud, Switzerland. Its name translates to Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. Its acronym is EPFL. The university boasts 8,000 students who major in classes including engineering, science and technology.
EPFL was established in 1853 by the federal government of Switzerland, to educate scientists and engineers. It was originally a private school and later, in 1869, would become the chief technical department for the Académie de Lausanne.
