National Cheng Kung University
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is a public research university located in Tainan, Taiwan. It was founded in 1931 as Tainan Technical College, and was renamed Provincial Cheng Kung University in 1956. It was renamed National Cheng Kung University in 1971.
NCKU's history can be traced back to 1931, when the Japanese colonial government established Tainan Technical College. The college was founded to train engineers and technicians to support the Japanese industrialization effort in Taiwan.
After World War II, the college was renamed Provincial Cheng Kung University and came under the control of the Chinese Nationalist government. The university was expanded and developed rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s, as Taiwan experienced a period of rapid economic growth.
In 1971, Provincial Cheng Kung University was renamed National Cheng Kung University. The university continued to grow and develop throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1985, NCKU Hospital was established.
In 1999, NCKU Hospital was upgraded to a medical center. In 2005, NCKU was chosen by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan) as one of the seven universities in Taiwan for the Aim for the Top University Project (邁向頂尖大學計畫), which is similar to Top Global University Project in Japan and Universities of Excellence in Germany.
Today, NCKU is a leading research university with a strong international reputation. NCKU has played a vital role in the development of Taiwan. The university has also been a major center for research and development in Taiwan.
