National Chiao Tung University

National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) is a top research university in Taiwan, located in Hsinchu City.
National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) was founded in 1896 as Nanyang Public School in Xujiahui, the suburbs of Shanghai. It was one of the first modern universities in China, and was established at the suggestion of Sheng Xuanhuai, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Qing dynasty. The university was initially focused on engineering and technology, but it later expanded to include other disciplines, such as science, humanities, and social sciences.
In 1912, Nanyang Public School was renamed the Shanghai Vocational College of Higher Education. In 1921, it was renamed again Chiao Tung University. In 1937, with the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, Chiao Tung University was relocated to the French Concession in Shanghai and then to various places in central China, such as Chungking, Hsiangtan, and Pin Yueh.
In 1945, after the end of the war, Chiao Tung University returned to Shanghai. However, in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party defeated the Kuomintang in the Chinese Civil War, and the Kuomintang government retreated to Taiwan. In 1958, Chiao Tung University was re-established in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Since its re-establishment in Taiwan, NCTU has grown rapidly and become one of the most prestigious universities in Taiwan.
NCTU is a highly selective university, with an acceptance rate of less than 10%. The university's student body is composed of students from all over Taiwan, as well as a large number of international students.
NCTU is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the Global Engineering Education Coalition (GEC).
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, National Chiao Tung University is positioned as the #219 top university in the world, which makes it the #4 top university in Taiwan. The university's global rank decreased by 2 points from last year.
