Thammasat University

Thammasat University (Mahawitthayalai Thammasat) is a public research university in Thailand with campuses in Tha Phra Chan, Rangsit, Pattaya and Lampang Province. Thammasat is Thailand's second oldest university.
Thammasat University was founded in 1927 as the University of Law and Political Science by Pridi Banomyong, a Thai statesman and economist who is considered the father of Thai democracy. Pridi envisioned Thammasat as a university that would train future leaders of Thailand and promote democracy and social justice.
The university was originally located in a former royal palace in Bangkok, but in 1934 it was renamed Thammasat University and moved to a new campus in Tha Phra Chan. Thammasat quickly became one of the leading universities in Thailand, and its graduates have played prominent roles in Thai politics, business, and academia.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Thammasat was a center of student activism and dissent. In 1973, the university was the site of a major student protest against the military dictatorship that was ruling Thailand at the time. The protest was violently suppressed by the military, and over 100 students were killed.
Despite its history of activism, Thammasat University has remained a leading institution of higher education in Thailand. Today, the university offers a wide range of programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. It also has a strong research reputation, with its faculty members conducting cutting-edge research in a wide range of fields.
Thammasat University is a leading university in Thailand and Southeast Asia. It is known for its academic excellence, its commitment to social justice, and its vibrant student life.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, Thammasat University is positioned as the #596 top university in the world, which makes it the #4 top university in Thailand. The university's global rank is improved by 4 points from last year.
