Tunis University (Arabic: جامعة تونس, French: Université de Tunis) is a public university in Tunis, Tunisia.
The history of Tunis University can be traced back to the 7th century AD, when the Al-Zaytuna Mosque was founded in Tunis. The mosque quickly became a major center of Islamic learning, and its students and faculty played an important role in the development of Islamic theology and jurisprudence.
In the 19th century, Tunisia came under French colonial rule. The French authorities initially suppressed Islamic education, but they eventually came to see the importance of Al-Zaytuna Mosque as a center of Tunisian culture and identity. In 1883, the French government established the School of Law of Tunis, which was affiliated with Al-Zaytuna Mosque. The School of Law offered a modern education in French law, while still teaching Islamic law.
In the early 20th century, a new generation of Tunisian intellectuals emerged, many of whom had been educated at Al-Zaytuna Mosque and the School of Law of Tunis. These intellectuals were inspired by the ideas of the Arab Renaissance, and they began to call for reforms to Tunisian society. They also played a leading role in the Tunisian independence movement.
After Tunisia gained independence from France in 1956, the government established Tunis University in 1960. Tunis University was formed by merging the School of Law of Tunis, the School of Medicine of Tunis, and the School of Sciences of Tunis.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Tunis University faced challenges due to economic problems in Tunisia. However, the university continued to grow and develop, and it remained one of the leading universities in the Arab world.
