Bishop Stuart University is a private university in Mbarara, Uganda.
This institution of higher learning traces its roots back to the early 20th century, with its origins in a theological college established in 1913. Initially focused on training teachers and clergy, the college played a vital role in shaping Christian education in the region. Over the decades, it gradually expanded its academic scope and influence, eventually becoming a prominent Christian university in 1992, recognized for its commitment to faith-based education and leadership development. In 1952, the teacher training arm of the college was relocated to a new site, where it continued to develop and grow. This move laid the foundation for a dedicated teacher training college, which played a crucial role in preparing educators to serve in schools across Uganda. With a growing demand for trained teachers, the institution strengthened its curriculum, modernized its facilities, and became a key pillar in national education.
The turn of the millennium brought significant changes, marking the beginning of a new chapter. In 2002, the decision was made to establish a university at the site of the former teacher training college, further expanding its academic mission. The new institution was named after a significant figure in the Anglican Church of Uganda from the mid-20th century, reflecting its deep historical and religious roots. Initially, the fledgling university operated in affiliation with the established Christian university from which it originated, allowing it to offer degrees, diplomas, and certificates under the accreditation of its parent institution. A key milestone was reached in 2014 when the institution received its own charter from the National Council for Higher Education. This granted it full independence to award its own degrees, marking a significant step in its development and recognition as a university in its own right. Today, the university stands as a testament to its long and evolving history, having grown into a respected institution with a diverse range of academic programs. It continues to contribute to education, research, and community development in Uganda, shaping future generations of leaders and professionals.
