Kyambogo University is a public university in Uganda, located in the town of Kyambogo, about 8 kilometers northeast of Kampala, the capital city. It is one of the four public universities in Uganda, and the second oldest, after Makerere University.
The history of Kyambogo University can be traced back to 1928, when the Uganda Polytechnic was founded as a small technical school on Makerere Hill. The school was transferred to Kyambogo Hill in 1958 and renamed the Kampala Technical Institute. It was renamed Uganda Technical College in 1964 and finally Uganda Polytechnic, Kyambogo (UPK) in 1970.
The Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK) was founded in 1967 as a national teachers' college. It was established to train secondary school teachers, and it offered a two-year diploma program. ITEK was upgraded to a college in 1989 and granted statutory status by Parliament.
The Uganda National Institute for Special Education (UNISE) was founded in 1974 as a national institute for the training of special education teachers. It offered a two-year diploma program in special education.
In 2001, the Ugandan government enacted the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, which established a new framework for higher education in the country. The Act also provided for the merger of several existing institutions into new universities. As a result of this merger, UPK, ITEK, and UNISE were merged to form Kyambogo University in 2003.
Kyambogo University is committed to providing its students with a high-quality education and a well-rounded university experience. The university has a strong reputation for academic excellence and research productivity, and its graduates are in high demand in the public and private sectors.
Kyambogo University is ranked as the #4 top university in Uganda during 2024. This is the same rank as last year.
