National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy stands as one of Ukraine's most ancient and esteemed educational institutions whose past demonstrates its close connection to the country's cultural and political heritage. The institution began its existence in 1615 as the Kyiv Brotherhood School which later integrated with the Lavra School during 1632 when Metropolitan Petro Mohyla took charge to establish the Kyiv-Mohyla Collegium. The institution achieved academy status in 1658 and operated as a top educational center for Eastern Europe until its closure by the Russian Empire in 1817 when it became a theological academy. The academy achieved re-establishment as a secular independent university in 1991 after the Soviet Union collapsed which marked the beginning of new Ukrainian higher education system.

The university’s guiding motto is the Latin phrase Tempus fugit, Academia aeterna which translates to "Time passes but the Academy is eternal." The institution demonstrates its ability to endure through multiple periods of institutional closure while maintaining its dedication to fundamental principles which include scholarly research and academic freedom. NaUKMA became the first university to establish independence from Soviet educational systems in Ukraine when it introduced liberal arts programs that used international educational standards to develop bachelor master and PhD degree programs. The institution operates with strong academic standards that serve as the basis for its activities while functioning as a "change agent" dedicated to establishing a democratic society.
