University of Brescia operates as an important public research university which functions as a research university in the central area of Lombardy region. The university operates as an essential scientific and cultural center which supports the industrial zone that exists within Europe’s most efficient industrial area. The university operates its campus through an urban design which positions its administrative and educational facilities inside reconditioned historical buildings that include the Palazzo Martinengo which functions as the university's main administrative building. The historical roots of the university trace back to the early 1960s, a period marked by local efforts to establish higher education courses in a city that was rapidly expanding industrially. The Chamber of Commerce together with local governments launched the first efforts which resulted in the establishment of the Consorzio Universitario Bresciano. The educational institution provided courses for nearly 20 years through partnerships with University of Parma and Politecnico di Milano. The University of Brescia achieved its first independent university status when the Italian government established it as a university with three original schools in 1982. The university developed into a complete academic institution which provided advanced educational programs in Northern Italy during the mid-1990s.
