Midlands State University

Midlands State University (MSU) is a public university in Gweru, Zimbabwe.

The roots of Midlands State University (MSU) can be traced back to the establishment of Gweru Teachers' College in 1954. The college was initially intended to train secondary school teachers for the expanding education system in Rhodesia, which was then under British colonial rule. The college offered a three-year diploma program in education, and it quickly established itself as a leading teacher training institution in the country.

In 1990, Gweru Teachers' College was upgraded to a polytechnic, and it began to offer a wider range of courses, including engineering, business, and science. The polytechnic continued to grow and develop throughout the 1990s, and it became increasingly clear that there was a need for a fully-fledged university in the Midlands region of Zimbabwe.

In 1999, the government of Zimbabwe announced the establishment of Midlands State University. The university was formed by merging Gweru Polytechnic with the Gweru School of Nursing. The new university was initially housed on the campuses of the two former institutions, but it soon began to develop its own campus in the suburbs of Gweru.

MSU has a strong research focus and is home to several research centers and institutes. The university has also established a number of partnerships with local and international organizations.
