Ferhat Abbas University, Sétif was founded in 1978 as the Sétif University Center. It was initially composed of three institutes: Economics, Exact Sciences and Technology, and Foreign Languages. The university was renamed Ferhat Abbas University in 1992, after the illustrious Ferhat Abbas, a well-known figure of the national movement and first President of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (1958).
