The University of Newcastle serves as an esteemed research institution which operates as a public research institution in Newcastle New South Wales Australia. The university maintains a strong dedication to fairness and academic excellence which enables it to maintain a position among the worlds top universities. The main campus of the institution located in Callaghan encompasses a large natural bushland area which creates a special environment that combines contemporary building design with native plant life. The university dedicates its operations to regional development and environmental preservation according to its official motto I look ahead which establishes the institution as a critical knowledge base and economic force for the Hunter and Central Coast regions.
The institution traces its earliest roots to the establishment of the Newcastle Teachers College in 1949 and the Newcastle University College in 1951 which originally operated as an offshoot of the New South Wales University of Technology. The community spent many years fighting for their own independent regional university but they achieved their goal when the university received its independent status on January 1 1965. The local community celebrated this new independence which officially began on the Callaghan bushland site in 1966. The university developed its presence throughout the next 40 years by constructing new campuses which extended from Newcastle city center to Central Coast and Singapore while transforming from a small college into an international research institution.
