The University of Wollongong (UOW) is a public research university located in the coastal city of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, approximately 80 kilometres south of Sydney.
The history of the University of Wollongong (UOW) can be traced back to 1951, when a division of the New South Wales University of Technology was established in Wollongong. The division was initially focused on providing technical education for engineers and metallurgists required for the region's steel industry.
In 1961, the division became the Wollongong College of the University of New South Wales. The college grew rapidly over the next decade, and in 1975, it was granted full university status.
UOW has also developed a strong reputation for its research. The university is home to a number of world-renowned research centers, such as the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science.
UOW has also played a major role in the development of the Illawarra region. The university has helped to attract new businesses and industries to the region, and it has also provided a highly skilled workforce for local employers.
