The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) is a public research university in Vienna, Austria.
The history of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) dates back to 1872, when it was founded as the Imperial and Royal Academy of Agriculture and Forestry. The academy was established to meet the growing need for trained agricultural and forestry professionals in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
In the early years, the academy offered a limited number of programs in agriculture and forestry. However, the curriculum was gradually expanded to include new fields such as viticulture, horticulture, and animal husbandry. In 1919, the academy was renamed the University of Agriculture and Forestry.
After the Second World War, the university underwent a significant expansion. New programs were added in fields such as food sciences, environmental sciences, and veterinary sciences. In 1975, the university was renamed the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna.
Today, BOKU is one of the leading universities in Europe. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in English and German. BOKU is also a member of the Euroleague for Life Sciences, a network of leading universities in Europe in the field of life sciences.
