Chittagong Medical University

Chittagong Medical University (CMU) is a public medical university situated in Fauzdarhat in Chittagong District of Bangladesh.

Chittagong Medical University, though young, boasts a rich history intertwined with the evolution of medical education in Chittagong. Its roots stretch back to 1927, when the Chittagong Medical School was established within the Chittagong General Hospital, offering a four-year Licentiate course (LMF) to train mid-level physicians. Recognizing the growing need for full-fledged medical education, the government decided in 1956 to elevate the school to a college. Thus, in 1957, Chittagong Medical College was born, starting with only three departments (Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry) and 26 teachers for its 76 inaugural students.

Over the years, Chittagong Medical College saw steady growth, adding new departments and expanding its facilities. The attached Chittagong Medical College Hospital, initially with 120 beds, was upgraded to a modern six-story structure in 1969. The college consistently produced 150-225 graduates annually, contributing significantly to Bangladesh's healthcare workforce.

The dream of a dedicated medical university in Chittagong finally materialized in 2016. The Chittagong Medical University Act officially established the institution, marking a major milestone in the city's medical landscape. Since then, CMU has rapidly grown, offering diverse undergraduate and postgraduate programs while building strong ties with affiliated hospitals, clinics, and research institutes.

Though a young university, CMU carries the legacy of the Chittagong Medical College and embraces the responsibility of providing high-quality medical education and research. As it continues to evolve, CMU strives to serve the health needs of the people of Bangladesh and fulfill its commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility.
