KU Leuven traces its origins to the Old University of Leuven, and the college of those years was modeled after colleges in Vienna, Cologne, and Paris. When Belgium won independence from the Netherlands in the 1830s, bishops in Belgium formed a new Catholic University at Mechelen, which would later have its name changed to the one we know today.
