University of Liège

The University of Liège (French: Université de Liège), or ULiège, is a major public university of the French Community of Belgium

The University of Liège (ULiège) was founded in 1817 by William I of the Netherlands, then King of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. The university was initially located in the buildings of the former Walloon Jesuit college, but it soon expanded to include other buildings in the city center.

In 1830, Belgium gained its independence from the Netherlands. The new Belgian government confirmed the status of ULiège as a state university, and the university continued to grow and develop. In the late 19th century, ULiège built a new campus on the outskirts of the city. This campus, known as Sart Tilman, is now the main campus of ULiège.

ULiège has played a significant role in the history of Belgium. The university has produced many notable alumni, including scientists, politicians, artists, and writers. ULiège has also been at the forefront of scientific and technological research. For example, in 1948, ULiège scientists developed the first cyclotron in Belgium.

ULiège is a member of the Coimbra Group, a network of leading European universities. The university has a strong international focus, with over 20% of its student body coming from outside of Belgium. ULiège also has partnerships with universities and research institutions all over the world.

ULiège is located in the city of Liège, which is the third-largest city in Belgium. Liège is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with a rich history and culture. The university campus is located in the heart of the city, close to all amenities.
