University of Gondar

University of Gondar is a public university in Gondar, Ethiopia.

The history of the University of Gondar (UoG) dates back to 1954, when it was established as the Public Health College and Training Centre (PHC & TC). The PHC & TC was a joint effort between the Imperial Ethiopian government, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States Operation Mission to Ethiopia, and UNICEF. It was established to address the pressing health needs of Ethiopia at the time.

The PHC & TC quickly became a leading center for public health practice in Ethiopia, and it played a key role in training the country's first public health professionals. In 1961, the college was placed under the direction of the Haile Selassie I University, now known as Addis Ababa University. The college also began offering a bachelor of science degree in Public Health.

Over the next 20 years, the PHC & TC continued to grow and expand its programs. In 1978, the college was reorganized with the help of Karl Marx University in East Germany (now known as Leipzig University). The reorganization led to the establishment of the Gondar College of Medical Sciences (GCMS), which offered a wider range of programs, including medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.

In 1992, the GCMS regained its autonomy and became the University of Gondar. The university has since continued to grow and expand its programs.

UoG has played an important role in the development of Ethiopia. The university has produced a number of notable alumni, including physicians, scientists, educators, and politicians. UoG continues to educate the country's next generation of leaders and professionals.
