Sorbonne University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, was founded in 1253 by Robert de Sorbon as the Sorbonne College. It was initially a theological college, but it soon expanded to offer other disciplines as well. In 1793, during the French Revolution, the Sorbonne College was closed, but it was reopened in 1811 as the Faculty of Arts of the University of Paris.
