Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen

Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, located in the picturesque state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is one of Europe’s most distinguished and venerable institutions of higher learning. The university operates without a central campus because its departments and institutes exist throughout the historic Old Town and the surrounding hills which form the city. Count Eberhard V (Eberhard the Bearded) established the university in 1477 to create a humanism center for his domain. The institution adopted its name in 1769 because Duke Karl Eugen died and became the university's first president. Tübingen emerged as a key location for revolutionary knowledge development which began during the Reformation and continued through the Enlightenment. The famous Stift, or Protestant seminary, served as the residence and training ground for some of Germany’s greatest thinkers, including the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and the poet Friedrich Hölderlin. The university achieved academic excellence during European conflicts and played a crucial role in developing modern philology and theology throughout the 19th century.
