Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main

Johann Wolfgang Goethe University which people commonly call Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main serves as a major public research university in Frankfurt am Main Germany. The university serves as a "citizens' university" because its establishment and financial support came from the affluent and progressive residents of Frankfurt which represents an uncommon academic practice found in German universities. The university operates multiple specialized campuses with Westend Campus located in the historic IG Farben Building recognized as one of Europe's most architecturally impressive and attractive campus environments. The institution participates as a fundamental member of the Rhine-Main Universities alliance which designates it a "workshop for the future" because it promotes social responsibility and international perspectives through its debate activities which occur in Germany's financial capital.

The university established its foundation in 1914 when the citizens of Frankfurt developed their desire to construct a contemporary academic institution which would embody Enlightenment thought from the Age of Reason. The university received its current name in 1932 because Frankfurt's most famous native son Johann Wolfgang von Goethe became its namesake. The "Frankfurt School" which the university established during the 20th century developed into a worldwide center for social theory through its work with prominent scholars such as Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. The university regained its academic status after World War II despite the National Socialist regime which had expelled Jewish and liberal intellectuals from the institution because it developed several Nobel Prize winners and its campus became a center for student protests and democratic discussions in West Germany.
