The institution adopted its present name because the early 19th century needed to honor both its second founder and King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria. The university developed into a global scientific research institution which became famous for being the location where Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays in 1895, a discovery that earned the first-ever Nobel Prize in Physics.
