Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) is a public research university in Munich, Germany. It is the sixth-oldest university in continuous operation in Germany, and one of the most prestigious universities in Europe.

Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) was founded in 1472 as the University of Ingolstadt by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria. It was one of the first universities in Germany to offer a secular education, and it quickly became a center of learning and scholarship. In 1826, the university was moved to Munich and renamed Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in honor of King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

LMU has played a significant role in the development of German science and culture. Many notable scholars have taught and studied at LMU, including Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, Max Planck, and Werner Heisenberg.
