Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) is a public research university located in Delhi, India. It is one of the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India to be Centres of Excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) was established in 1961 as the College of Engineering and Technology. The college was founded with the assistance of the Government of the United Kingdom, which provided financial and technical support. The foundation stone for the college was laid by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1959.

The college started functioning in temporary premises in Hauz Khas, Delhi, in 1961. The first batch of students, comprising 121 students in four disciplines, graduated in 1965. The college was shifted to its permanent campus in Hauz Khas in 1969.

In 1963, the college was declared an Institution of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. It was also renamed as the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

IIT Delhi has grown rapidly over the years. It now offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in a wide range of engineering, science and technology disciplines. The institute also has a strong research focus and is home to many world-renowned research centers and laboratories.

IIT Delhi has played a significant role in the development of India's scientific and technological capabilities. The institute has produced many of India's leading scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs. IIT Delhi is also a major hub for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is positioned as the #197 top university in the world, which makes it the #2 top university in India. The university's global rank decreased by 23 points from last year.
