The history of the institute began in 2008 when it was founded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act. The university started its academic activities on August 18, 2008, from a temporary campus which operated in the Ordnance Factory area of Medak. The collaboration with the Government of Japan which provided essential technical skills and financial support for building its research facilities and infrastructural systems created a defining factor for its early development. The international partnership with other countries led to the establishment of a permanent 576-acre campus which opened in July 2015 and now develops advanced research parks and high-tech residential areas.
