Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is a public technical university located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) was established in 1959 as one of the first Indian Institutes of Technology. The institute was created with the assistance of a consortium of nine US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP).

IIT Kanpur was founded with the vision of creating a world-class institution that would produce leaders in science and technology. The institute was also tasked with playing a leading role in the development of India's industrial sector.

IIT Kanpur started its operations in December 1959 in a room in the canteen building of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute at Agricultural Gardens in Kanpur. The first batch of students was admitted in August 1960.

In the early years, IIT Kanpur was heavily dependent on foreign aid and expertise. However, the institute quickly developed its own strengths and became a center of excellence in engineering and science education.

Under the KIAP program, faculty members from the US universities assisted IIT Kanpur in the setting up of its academic programs and development of laboratories for instruction as well as research. The KIAP program ended in 1972, but IIT Kanpur continued to collaborate with US universities and other international institutions.

Over the years, IIT Kanpur has grown into a leading institution of higher education and research in India. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, science, humanities, and management.
