Jadavpur University

Jadavpur University serves as a distinguished public research university which functions in the Indian city of Kolkata in West Bengal. The university's establishment dates back to the Swadeshi Movement of 1905 when India began its campaign for independence. The movement originated from the National Council of Education which Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo and Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik established in 1906 to create an educational system which would counter British control and support national educational development. The council established the Bengal Technical Institute which evolved into the College of Engineering and Technology. The Government of West Bengal established Jadavpur University as a statutory state university on December 24 1955 through the Jadavpur University Act which converted the educational project into a formal university.
