National University of Mongolia

National University of Mongolia (NUM) is a public university primarily located in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The National University of Mongolia (NUM) was established on October 5, 1942, as the first modern university in Mongolia. The faculties were initially Pedagogy, Medicine, and Veterinary Sciences. Part of its operation were supported by staff and materials provided by the Soviet Union, so much of the instruction was conducted in Russian.

In the early years, NUM faced a number of challenges, including a shortage of qualified faculty and resources. However, the university quickly grew and developed, and by the 1960s, it had become a leading center for higher education in Mongolia.

During the socialist period, NUM played an important role in training the party elite and professionals for the Mongolian government and economy. Education at NUM was free, and admission was based on merit. However, the government also controlled the curriculum and faculty appointments, and ensured that the university was ideologically sound.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, NUM underwent a period of reform and restructuring. The university introduced new programs and faculties, and expanded its international partnerships. NUM also became more autonomous from the government, and students were given more freedom in choosing their courses of study.
