Madonna University, Eleleis the first private Catholic university in Nigeria.

The university was founded in 1999 as the first private Catholic university in Nigeria, marking a significant step in expanding higher education with a focus on Catholic values. It was established in Okija, Anambra State, under the leadership of Father Edeh, who had previously founded Our Saviour Institute of Science and Technology in Enugu. The university’s founding vision was to provide quality education that integrated academic excellence with ethical and moral development, shaping future leaders grounded in faith. This strong foundation set the stage for the institution’s growth and continued success. In 2004, the university’s main campus was relocated to Elele in Rivers State, following approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC). This relocation was pivotal, allowing the university to expand its academic reach and create a more conducive learning environment for its growing student body. The move helped the institution to enhance its infrastructure and facilities, enabling it to meet the demands of an evolving education landscape. Today, the university operates three campuses: Elele, Okija, and Akpugo, each with its own unique academic focus.
