University of Port Harcourt

University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) is a federal university located in Choba, near Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria.

The University of Port Harcourt was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt, and was granted full university status in 1977. The university was founded to serve the educational needs of the people of Rivers State and the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

The university's first vice-chancellor was Professor Tam David-West, a renowned virologist and medical scientist. Under his leadership, the university quickly established itself as a leading institution of higher learning in Nigeria.

In the early years of its existence, the university faced a number of challenges, including a shortage of qualified faculty and staff, limited funding, and political instability. However, the university persevered and continued to grow and develop.
