Comenius University in Bratislava

Comenius University in Bratislava is the largest and oldest university in Slovakia.

The history of Comenius University in Bratislava dates back to 1465, when the Academia Istropolitana was founded by Matthias Corvinus, the Hungarian King. The Academia Istropolitana was the first university in what is now Slovakia, and it operated for only 20 years before being closed due to financial difficulties.

In 1919, shortly after the creation of Czechoslovakia, the government decided to establish a new university in Bratislava. The university was named after Jan Amos Comenius, a 17th-century Czech teacher and philosopher who is considered to be the father of modern education.

Comenius University opened its doors to students in 1920, with four faculties: Law, Medicine, Arts, and Philosophy. The university quickly expanded, and by the 1930s it had over 3,000 students.

During World War II, Comenius University was closed by the Nazi occupation forces. However, the university reopened in 1945, after the war ended.

In the communist era, Comenius University was subject to ideological control by the government. However, the university remained a center of academic excellence, and its graduates played a leading role in the Velvet Revolution of 1989, which overthrew the communist regime.
