University of Almería is a public university situated in Almería, Spain.

The institution's story begins in the early 1990s, a period of growth and development for the Almería region of Spain.  Recognizing the need for a dedicated center of higher learning, local authorities and academics began advocating for the establishment of a university.  This push was driven by a desire to provide greater educational opportunities for the local population, stimulate regional economic growth, and foster research and innovation. The formal creation of the university came in 1993, making it one of the younger universities in Spain. This relative youth is a significant part of its identity, fostering a dynamic and forward-thinking approach to education.  The institution was built upon the foundation of existing university colleges and centers in Almería, consolidating various disciplines under one umbrella.

The initial years were focused on building the physical infrastructure.  A modern campus was constructed in the La Cañada de San Urbano district, close to the Mediterranean coast.  This provided a purpose-built environment for teaching, research, and student life.  Simultaneously, the university dedicated itself to developing a comprehensive range of academic programs, attracting faculty, and establishing its reputation within the Spanish higher education system.
