Duke University, often simply called “Duke”, is located in Durham, North Carolina, USA. It is a private school dedicated to research. With over 14,000 students, Duke offers courses in engineering, arts & sciences and nursing. The school was involved in the Human Genome Project along with other universities on the cutting edge of genetics.
Duke was founded in 1838, as Brown’s Schoolhouse. It was located in what is now the town, Trinity. It was organized by a group of Quakers and Methodists. It would go on in 1841 to become the Union Institute Academy. It was one of the first colleges to be open to women.
