Rice University

Rice University is a private research university in Houston, Texas.

Rice University was founded in 1891 by Houston businessman William Marsh Rice. It opened its doors in 1912 as the Rice Institute, a coeducational college of arts and sciences. In 1963, Rice became a university, and in 1966, it admitted its first African American students. Rice has grown significantly over the years, and now offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and 30 graduate programs. The university is known for its strong engineering, science, and humanities programs, and its alumni include many notable figures, such as Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and astronauts.

Rice students are involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including athletics, student government, and student organizations. There are over 200 student organizations at Rice, so there is something for everyone. Some of the most popular student organizations include the Rice Owls athletic teams, the Rice Thresher student newspaper, and the Rice Performing Arts Company.

Rice's residential college system is another unique aspect of student life. Each student is assigned to one of 11 residential colleges as a freshman. The residential colleges are self-governing communities where students live, dine, and socialize together. The residential college system helps to create a strong sense of community at Rice.
