Stanford University

The Leland Stanford Junior University in Stanford, California, is commonly referred to as Stanford, Stanford University, or SU. It occupies an 8,180 acre campus and is considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious universities. It was founded in 1891 by Leland Stanford as a memorial to his son, who succumbed to typhoid at age 15. Until the 1930s, tuition was free.

Divided into seven schools, Stanford has approximately 8,900 graduate students and 7,000 undergraduates. The professional schools are Medicine, Law, Business, Engineering and Education. The academic schools include the Earth Sciences as well as the Humanities and Sciences.
