Africa University

Africa University is a private university in Zimbabwe.

The university was founded in 1992 as the first private, fully accredited, degree-granting United Methodist-related institution of higher learning on the continent of Africa. It was established to address the growing need for quality education in Africa, focusing on leadership development, spiritual growth, and moral values. The founders envisioned a Pan-African institution that would unite students from across the continent, creating a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Their goal was to prepare graduates who would make meaningful contributions to their communities and the continent as a whole. The university's history is marked by significant milestones and strong advocacy. In 1984, two African bishops, with the backing of thousands of African Methodists, initiated the call to establish the institution. This vision was formally supported by the United Methodist Church's General Conference in 1988, which pledged financial support to bring it to life. Groundbreaking for the campus began in 1991, and the first classes commenced the following year with an inaugural cohort of 40 students representing six African nations.

Over time, the university has seen substantial growth, expanding its academic offerings and student population. Today, it provides undergraduate and graduate education across various disciplines while fostering a culture of ethical leadership and service. The institution’s strong emphasis on community engagement has led to impactful initiatives addressing critical issues such as poverty, public health, and environmental sustainability.
