Laval University

The public research institution Laval University located in Quebec City Canada operates as the oldest French-language university in North America. The campus which exists in a UNESCO World Heritage site functions as the main center of Francophone cultural activities and intellectual research work which draws researchers from all parts of the world. The university maintains its position among Canada's top research institutions through its dedication to innovative research methods and environmental protection initiatives and its commitment to socially responsible practices which create an inclusive academic atmosphere.

The university's foundation dates back to 1663 when Monsignor François de Montmorency-Laval established the Séminaire de Québec to educate clergy members for the colony. The institution developed together with the province during its first 200 years until Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter in 1852 which recognized the institution as a university. The institution moved from its original Old Quebec site to its current Sainte-Foy campus during the 20th century because of its rapid expansion needs. The university established its current independent governance system through the 1971 charter which marked a time of increasing secularization.
