University of Guelph operates as a comprehensive public research university which serves as a leading research institution in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. The university has maintained its educational heritage for more than 150 years because its three original colleges have served as its foundation. The Ontario Agricultural College opened its doors in 1874 when the provincial government acquired farmland to establish the college which was followed by the establishment of the Ontario Veterinary College which became the first veterinary college in North America and the Macdonald Institute which opened in 1903. The three institutions which operated separately with different institutions until May 1964 when Ontario Legislature merged them to create University of Guelph. The institution used this merger to develop into a university which offers multiple academic programs while maintaining its founding educational strengths.
