University of Saskatchewan

University of Saskatchewan operates as a public research university which serves as the main educational institution of Saskatchewan while it belongs to the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities. The campus maintains its reputation as one of Canada's most attractive locations because it contains extensive green areas such as "The Bowl" and displays distinct collegiate Gothic architectural styles. The university base its identity on Treaty 6 Territory and Métis Homeland because it demonstrates a strong dedication to diversity and the incorporation of Indigenous ways of knowing.

The university was officially established on March 19, 1907, following the passage of the University Act by the provincial legislature. The new institution faced competition from multiple cities which wanted to become its base, yet Saskatoon emerged as the chosen location in 1909 when Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier laid the first building's cornerstone in 1910. The campus features original buildings which utilized local "greystone" (native limestone) to create a visual identity that now represents the university. The university has operated as an innovation center since its founding which led to the creation of the first non-commercial cobalt-60 therapy unit for cancer treatment in 1951 and the launch of the Canadian Light Source synchrotron.
