Birla Institute of Technology and Science is a well-regarded and respected Private Deemed University in India that is recognised globally as an authority in higher education and research. BITS Pilani is located at five different sites - the main campus is in Pilani, Rajasthan, while the other campuses are located in Goa, Hyderabad, Dubai, and Mumbai - all of which provide internationally competitive academic programs and are designated as Institutions of Eminence. The unique feature of the institution is its admissions policy that does not require students to undergo a quota system based on state or religious affiliation and thus maintains an environment of academic excellence in its purest form.
The heritage of BITS Pilani can be traced back to 1901 when Seth Shiv Naranji Birla founded a school in Pilani to educate his grandsons, including the legendary industrialist G.D. Birla. The humble institution started by Seth Shiv Naranji Birla in 1901 underwent many transformations and evolved from a humble "pathashala" in 1901 to a high school in 1925, an intermediate college in 1929, and a degree college by 1943. During the Second World War, the institution served as a technical training center for the Indian Defense Services. The modern institution that we know today was founded in 1964 by amalgamating several technical colleges in arts, commerce, and engineering under the guidance of the Ford Foundation and in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
The institution has today emerged as a symbol of India’s technical and entrepreneurial prowess and has an extensive network of alumni in key leadership positions in all the leading multinational corporations in the world. The institution is known for its unique academic programs such as the Practice School and its entrepreneurial achievements in launching many startups. The institution remains committed to its founding mission and continues to expand its academic and research capabilities and its digital presence.
