Indian Institute of Science

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public, deemed, research university for higher education and research in science, engineering, design, and management. It is located in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, Karnataka.
The history of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) dates back to the late 19th century, when Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, a successful industrialist and philanthropist, envisioned a world-class scientific institution in India. He believed that science and technology were essential for India's economic and social development.
In 1898, Tata wrote to the Viceroy of India, Lord Elgin, proposing the establishment of an institute of science. He offered to donate Rs. 1 crore (approximately US$3 million at the time) to the project. The Government of India agreed to provide matching funds, and the Maharaja of Mysore donated a 371-acre plot of land for the institute.
The Indian Institute of Science was founded in 1909, and the first batch of students was admitted in 1911. The institute started with just two departments: General and Applied Chemistry and Electrical Technology. Over the years, new departments were added, and the institute grew in size and stature.
IISc played a significant role in the development of science and technology in India. It was one of the first institutions in India to offer advanced degrees in science and engineering. IISc faculty and students have made important contributions to a wide range of fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and mathematics.
During World War II, IISc played a vital role in the Allied war effort. The institute's scientists and engineers developed new technologies for the Indian military and for Allied forces fighting in Southeast Asia.
After independence, IISc continued to play a leading role in India's scientific and technological development. The institute's faculty and students have made significant contributions to India's space program, nuclear program, and other important national initiatives.
Today, IISc is one of the premier scientific institutions in India and is ranked among the top universities in the world. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in a wide range of disciplines, and its faculty and students are involved in cutting-edge research in a variety of areas.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2025, Indian Institute of Science is positioned as the #211 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in India. The university's global rank is improved by 14 points from last year.
