Indian Institute of Technology Madras

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is a public technical university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the most prestigious engineering institutes in India and is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world.

The history of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) dates back to 1956, when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was on an official visit to West Germany. The German government offered assistance to set up a higher technological institute in India, and this offer was accepted.

The first Indo-German agreement for the establishment of IIT Madras was signed in Bonn, West Germany in 1959. The institute was inaugurated in the same year by the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The first batch of students, comprising 120 students from across India, was admitted in July 1959.

IIT Madras was started with technical, academic, and financial assistance from the Government of West Germany. It was at the time the largest international educational project sponsored by the West German government. IIT Madras has grown significantly since its inception.
